Glad I'm not the only one who thought Alligator was Pigpen's alter ego :) His voice and attitude really bring this character to life.

First known performance was at the Rio Nido Dance Hall... right by the Russian River...

Phil writes about this performance in his book as well and confirms that this is the first time they played Alligator, in response to an audience request for "something new!".

Yeah--but do you remember reading about them playing it on a riverbank, screeching feedback at boaters? I think the river motif comes in. The Alligator slunk out of that river!

I don't recall such a scenario, but I can imagine it easily. Typical Prankster behavior... kind of like Kesey "playing people" on his flute right at them as they walked by in shock.

Kites are in a few GD lyrics, Cosmic Charlie's also hung up waiting for a windy day, kite on ice since the first of february. Other folks are up in treetops lookin' for their kites.

What? The first performance of Alligator was 9-3-67?
That's news to me, considering the Alligators on 6-18-67 and 8-5-67 and possibly "5-5-67" all precede this show.

Phil's not to be taken literally on early dates - he also claims they didn't write Caution until after the Vancouver '66 shows.
However, you were also mistaken about Phil's dating. I don't see Alligator mentioned when he talks about the Rio Nido shows in his book, he just praises the Midnight Hour. Then for the 9-29-67 show, he says they'd been playing Alligator>Caution "for a while".
Actually, the "how about something new?" reference comes from their first Cafe a Go Go show in June '67. (Alligator debuted around that time.) He claims it was a 45-minute performance of Alligator... I'm suspicious, considering that for a New York audience in their first NY show, almost everything in the show would have been "new".

Whoops... I must have got my wires crossed up there in the ole noggin in remembering from Phil's book. I feel like a real nitwit right now, especially because I was aware of those earlier summer '67 shows with Alligator. Thanks for the clarification, lia.

I will do my best to do my research before posting crap off the top of my head in the future. Apologies to those mislead by my crap-shooting.

No apologies necessary. If there were, Dire and WT could never, ever post.

Hmmm--can you apologize on the web? Dire told me you can't do that...something about...well...hmmm...can't recall.

Anyway, doubt it's necessary.

We got a thousand points of light
For the homeless man
We got a kinder, gentler,
Machine gun hand
We got department stores
and toilet paper
Got styrofoam boxes
for the ozone layer
Got a man of the people,
says keep hope alive
Got fuel to burn,
got roads to drive.
